Sunday mornings

Our 8:00 a.m. service on Sunday morning is contemplative and quiet. There is no music. It is based on Rite I in the Book of Common Prayer. "Rite I" is an order of worship that uses the English language that was current when the first Book of Common Prayer was issued in England in 1549.

Our 10:30 a.m. service is larger, more lively and multi-generational. Led by the Adult Choir, we sing during much of the service, accompanied by organ and other instruments. The order of worship is usually based on "Rite II," which follows contemporary English usage. Our Handbell, Youth and Cherub Choirs also perform regularly at this service.

Our 2:00 p.m. service in Spanish is an exciting addition to our community at Emmanuel, begun in January 2012.  This service is entirely in Spanish, and we use a version of the liturgy that is in the Rite II contemporary language style.

Children's Chapel is held when we have a parent volunteer, during the 10:30 service.  Children ages 3-7 are dismissed after the Gospel reading, and return during the Peace.

Sung services:

Evensong is sung Evening Prayer, from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer.  The choir leads this service of prayer with chanted preces and responses, sung canticles, and choral anthems.  The tone of the service is meditative and reflective.  Eucharist is not celebrated at this service, and there is no sermon.  Emmanuel hosts many area choirs for our once-monthly Evensong services, including the JMU Madison Singers, the JMU Treble Chamber Choir, the JMU Men's Chamber Ensemble (KOR) and the EMS Touring Choir.  Click on the Evensong link for the schedule.

Compline is the late-night service of prayer, sung entirely in chant.  In the monastic tradition, Compline is the final office of prayer of the day before going to bed, and the text of the prayers reflect peace and quietness.  We are resting in God's grace as we come to the end of the day.  Sung Compline is held in the Nave at Emmanuel at 8:00pm as a Seasonal worship opportunity during Advent and Lent, and we use candles and incense to create an atmosphere of peace and stillness.

Mid-Week services:
The Wednesday evening service includes prayers for healing, with the laying on of hands, in the context of a celebration of the Holy Communion. It takes place in our chapel at 6:00 p.m.
